Meet Anna!

Anna helped out with the Danish high school team we had a few weeks ago. She helped with the painting and decorating of the creche.

Anna is our newest short-term volunteer. She is taking a gap- year before starting university, and has chosen to come and help iThemba for the next 4 months! She spent the end of last year waitressing to raise the money to come out here, and now that she’s here, she’s spending her time teaching art.

So far, Anna will be teaching grade 7, 8 and 9 art at one school, and grade 4 art at another school. As well as painting a huge mural at a creche, and working with children at Siyazama creche, she is hoping to have an after-school art club.

We all love Anna’s sun-shiney personality, and are so grateful she is here! If you speak Danish and want to follow her blog, you can do so here 🙂

Here are some ways you can pray for her:

Pray that she will have good relationships with the teachers she’s working with. Her aim is to help equip the teachers to become better at teaching art, rather than just doing everything herself. That can be a challenge!

Pray that she will be able to get her after school art club up and running. It is difficult in a classroom of 43 to really connect with students, and an after school club would allow for more one on one attention.

Pray for her cultural adjustment, and that she would find lots of friends! It’s hard working in another culture, especially when there is no one else around who understands exactly what it’s like for you. Anna has been a great cultural adapter so far: moving from a very time-oriented country like Denmark to laid-back Zulu culture has been a challenge she has met with grace! Pray that she’ll get a good support structure, as 4 months is a long time.
